A bath ladle is a traditional tool used in bathing, especially in Japanese and Scandinavian cultures, for rinsing the body with water. It’s often paired with a wooden stool in onsen (hot springs) or sento (public baths).

Types of Bath Ladles

  1. Japanese Bath Ladle (Hishaku, 柄杓)

    • Used in Japanese baths for scooping water from a wooden or plastic bucket.

    • Often made of wood, bamboo, or plastic.

    • Helps with a traditional rinse-before-soak bathing ritual.

  2. Scandinavian Sauna Ladle

    • Used for pouring water onto sauna stones to create steam (löyly).

    • Made of wood or metal with long handles to withstand heat.

  3. Plastic or Metal Bath Ladles

    • Modern versions made from heat-resistant plastic, stainless steel, or aluminum.

    • Often found in home bathrooms, spas, or bathhouses.

  4. Wooden Bath Ladle

    • Traditional, often paired with a wooden bucket for a rustic, spa-like feel.

    • Materials: Hinoki (Japanese cypress), cedar, or bamboo for a natural scent.
